New here? Start with: Why Parenting Feels So Hard (And the Shift that Changes Everything) →
What if the behaviour isn't the problem?
You've probably landed here because something in your family feels hard.
The meltdowns.
The arguing.
The refusals.
The school struggles.
The anxiety.
The constant reminding, negotiating, advocating and worrying.
Maybe you've read the books, listened to the experts and tried the strategies.
And still find yourself wondering...
Why is this so hard?
For generations, we've looked at struggling children and asked:
How do we get them to behave?
How do we make them listen?
Focus?
Calm down?
Try harder?
Stop melting down?
But behaviour is only the part we can see.
The evOLVED Brain goes underneath it.
Because underneath the refusal may be overwhelm.
Underneath the procrastination may be an executive-function gap.
Underneath the explosion may be a nervous system that's reached capacity.
Underneath "I don't care" may be a child protecting themselves from the possibility of failing.
And underneath a mother's frustration may be a woman who has been carrying the emotional weight of an entire family.
When we stop fighting the behaviour and start decoding it, everything changes.
We can stop asking:
"How do I make my child behave?"
And start asking:
"What is this behaviour trying to tell me?"
That's where a different kind of parenting begins.
Not permissive parenting.
Not perfect parenting.
evOLVED parenting.
Your child isn't the only one who needs support.
This is where the conversation gets bigger.
Most mothers don't arrive here thinking:
"I need support for my nervous system."
They arrive thinking:
"I need help with my child."
If they would just stop melting down...
If mornings weren't such a battle...
If school would get easier...
If they would listen...
If everyone would stop fighting...
then I could finally breathe.
But children's mental health doesn't exist in isolation.
Neither does behaviour.
We are nervous systems living in relationship with other nervous systems.
Which means supporting your child isn't only about what happens inside your child.
It's also about what happens between you.
The emotional climate of your home.
The pressure everyone is carrying.
The patterns you've inherited.
The expectations you're trying to meet.
And yes...
Your nervous system matters too.
Not because you're doing it wrong.
Because you are part of the ecosystem your child is growing inside.
And when we support the whole family instead of focusing exclusively on fixing the child...
Something begins to shift.
Maybe you don't need another parenting strategy.
Maybe you need a different lens.
One that helps you understand the brain beneath the behaviour.
One that makes room for disability and possibility.
One that honours science without abandoning intuition.
One that supports your child without asking them to become someone else.
One that recognizes that sometimes the child who challenges us most deeply...
is also inviting us to evolve.
This is the philosophy behind The evOLVED Brain:
Support the disability.
Protect the design.
Evolve the environment.
Because your child isn't a problem to solve.
They're a human to understand.
And so are you.
Real conversations. Powerful experts. Tools you can actually use.
The evOLVED Brain brings together neuroscience, psychology, education, nervous-system regulation, lived experience and some of the most important voices changing the way we understand children.
We talk about the things happening in your home right now:
ADHD and neurodivergence.
Big emotions and difficult behaviour.
Anxiety and overwhelm.
Executive function and motivation.
School struggles and advocacy.
Friendships and relationships.
Parent burnout and family mental health.
Confidence, identity and protecting your child's sense of self.
And we go beyond what to do...
to help you understand why it's happening in the first place.
Because when you understand the brain beneath the behaviour, you don't just collect more strategies.
You know what to do differently.
Some episodes will give you a tool you can use tonight.
Others will change the way you see your child forever.
You'll hear from leading voices in ADHD, neuroscience, parenting, education, mental health and human development.
You'll hear honest conversations about the parts of parenting we don't talk about enough.
And you'll leave with practical ideas you can bring into your home, your child's school and your relationship with your child.
But this podcast isn't only about raising children who are doing well.
It's about creating families that are well.
Children who feel understood.
Parents who feel supported.
Relationships that feel safer.
Homes with more connection and less conflict.
And children who grow up knowing:
There was never anything wrong with who I was.
CLAIM YOUR FREE GIFTHi, I'm Lara Dawn.
I'm a special education teacher, children's mental health and ADHD advocate, speaker, coach and mom of neurodivergent kids.
I've spent decades working with children and families.
But some of my greatest lessons didn't come from a degree, a certification or a classroom.
They came from my own children.
From the moments when everything I thought I knew about parenting wasn't working.
From trying harder...
and realizing harder wasn't what we needed.
From learning that there weren't just children struggling in our home.
There were nervous systems struggling together.
That realization changed the way I saw behaviour.
It changed the way I parented.
It changed the way I saw myself.
And eventually, it became the foundation for the work I now bring to families around the world.
I created The evOLVED Brain because I believe we need a bigger conversation about children's mental health.
One that doesn't begin with:
"How do we fix the child?"
But with:
"What does this child need to thrive?"
And then...
"What does this family need to thrive?"
You came here looking for help for your child.
You may discover something much bigger.
A new way of understanding their behaviour.
A new way of responding when things get hard.
A deeper relationship with your child.
More trust in yourself.
More compassion for the human underneath the behaviour...
including you.
And perhaps an entirely different understanding of what these extraordinary children are asking of us.
The podcast is the front door.
Come in.
There's an entire Village waiting for you.
